At the end of 1919, a college dropout who’d failed at mining, oil and farming, roughly in that order, but who’d brought considerable honor to himself as a captain in the war, opened a men’s clothing store in Kansas City. He took out a number of loans, and initially business was rewarding, but the deflationary depression of 1920-1921 proved bigger than his business model. In 1922, he closed shop, nearly bankrupt and heavily in debt. He was still a member of several civic organizations, though, and as it turned out, he proved much better at addressing other men than dressing them.
